Here in Southern Maryland the only access we have to a USDA facility to process meat is to drive the animals over an hour sometimes 2 hours to the nearest facility. That adds stress to the animal and cost to the consumer. A producers time and fuel is all a part of what consumers pay for when purchasing meat from a local producer.
I realize some may not want a facility next door but this type of facility is a mobile unit, the animals are not taken to the facility to be processed. The animals are processed through USDA regulations right at the producers location. Consumers have to eat and producers have to be able to process their meats. This type of facility makes so much sense. Everybody always wants things to be somewhere else, well somewhere else means it still is near someone else’s home.
